two more days of presentations, after that i will upload more, i promise
gene is feeling very comfortable in her new home and we had some strange
moments in the past days
our house is in the middle of the redlight district, so the street is busy
with ppl looking for action
last night a couple of guys came in and asked if they could use the toilet
it must have been quite confusing for them passing thru our environment

home alone
the mentor has left!
now i still have three days to mess around with this project
the housewarming party was so hectic:
i really did not enjoy that
but last night there were some very friendly visitors
gene was more calm and did not freeze the system
tonight we will do a whole new setup so i gotta hurry
preparing for 1800

backwards
just publishing this cos i am a bit shaken
more later about today
sunday12
have been trying to pack all my things into one bag,
cos i am very bad at keeping track of more than one
normally i travel completely light, cos most things one does not need,
or can be acquired everywhere
but this time, i am going to sealand, where one can not acquire anything
and i want to make something there, for the island, so i need to take materials
monday13
wrote this on the plane:
actually really enjoy flying, especially by the window
incredible fluffyness of the top of clouds
in clear sky the tiny details or seas frozen by distance, impressive mountains
reduced to toyness, cities by night
on the ground, aswell before takeoff as after landing, i saw some other planes
is it normal that they paint the tail end into jolly floral designs and exuberant abstract
patterns? i saw about five planes with regular serious business bodies, but weird jolly tails
maybe it is for a special occasion?
i met martin howse in london
we talked about his programming and his ideas for a film+software he is busy with
about the difference between random and alife
gossip, plans
the server system administrator had mentioned that server
problems might be occuring because of a severe disk crash some time ago
martin and me shopped around for the hard disk and i went on the train to harwich
found a b&b in the mariners
the smallest room i have ever occupied
work first tho, so trundled around harwich looking for a place to plug myself in and see
what my mailserver has come up with this time, going nuts doing all communications by phone
but no luck, no plugging in harwich
watched strange lights in the dark harbor
second: food. had a drink in the pier hotel, where apparently something was being celebrated
the whole lounge was full of old ppl, they must have been all over 60 years old this is
a carefull guess cos i actually thought they must be all over 70
they are having a real binge, i saw a granny hugging the toiletbowl in the ladies!!!!
generally it is a bit strange for ppl when i am alone somewhere in public
dont know why, maybe it is not normal for a girl to be alone?
but in this place i really stood out, like an alien
then i ate a smoked salmon which was really very good
carpet has a mermaid print
arriving back to mariniers pub there is philip who tells me that sealand
has a great population of the 'feathered variety', yes yes and ppl go hunt them
one other guest tells me he has been there and he says you climb little stairs
to get on top
mary, the bar lady says that on a clear day one can see it on the horizon
in any case they are better informed than me
to my great surprise and joy there is a real bathtub in the communal bathroom!
(no, not everywhere in the world houses have bathtubs routinely,
ppl who know me a bit, know how strongly i feel about hot baths)
i soak for about an hour
after which i wrote these entries and played with ap a bit

(pictures are taken at 8 in the morning on tuesday the 14th)

more art
went to an opening of a group exhibition in fons welters gallery there was one piece by gabriel lester i liked because i like the way it was made with a staple machine and very small pieces ripped from magazines (i saw the work in progress some days ago) it was nice to meet martin and elle there elle is stylist and together with carmen who is photographer they do some wildly crazy pictures in summer they made pictures of me for the cover of a japanese magazine, but they were never used, cos the magazine thought they were too weird martin is a brilliant choreographer and at the moment he is interested in line dancing(: then we played our own photo camera: one closes the eyes, while the other places them with the head in a particular position, then the blind one quickly opens and closes the eyes repeat voila! private picture show martin thinks it works better when drunk, but i think it is neat and the concept could greatly improve the atmosphere of gallery openings i was thinking that cameras and eyes are really a very different technology no, that is not right, it is only the kind of memory that is really different ooops thoughts started drifting again sorry decoy i guess i missed your music, kept getting 404 receiving staalplaat now without problem tho

do it yourself
so thats it: going to fix it my self!!! they can not seem to fix it and they say i better come and see for myself by now i can not even mount hd from here anymore can not send or receive messages anymore i can still write and read here so if i am not answering mail please write me here the hitch is that this server is really not next door: it is standing on SEALAND (especially for bbstar) it is a bit strange tho that they let me come there, cos i thought they did not allow anyone there physically but they actually told me to meet with immigration officers in the Pier Hotel, Harwich at 9 in the morning on tuesday the 14th of january this is totally absurd, i realize even while i am writing this! what if they lock me up on this island and never let me go?

reflection
in february i will be going to africa, senegal so i was checking if i require any extra shots so i find myself reading pages full of horrible illnesses i could attract in various places especially swimming in a waterfall does not seem to be recommended: some worm can actually enter the body thru the skin and grow and multiply and destroy some vital organs i dont get so worried by this news, but there is this weird thing that happens in my head like when you read what you eat? mmm no more like reading recipes and feeling stuffed afterwards? like it does not matter if this parasite multiplies physically or mentally: just by me reading about it, it has spread aswell what am i thinking about!
06. Jan 2003
cold
was thinking about cold cold can not be a healthy thing for a body i have reached this conclusion after extensive research observing my own body in different temperatures and analizing the effects on state of mind, quality of ideas, working ethics and general sense of pleasure and wellbeing there is a real dilemma here: in temperatures over 25 celsius the sense of wellbeing definitely improves and after acclimatization temperatures of 30+ become comforting like a drug in warmer temperatures a slightly bigger effort needs to be made for abstract thought more discipline is needed, then in temperatures below 15 celsius below 0 tho all pleasure and thought just disappears and my body goes into emergency state thats where i have been for some days now

more messages!
this is just too ridiculous! this morning came a message from the server help team saying: sorry for inconvenience, we solved the problem, etc blabla. and just now comes another one, with other letters, ok, but still from my adress, oh hell what a mess! i should not get a heartattack over this, it is not really nice tho when you dont understand what is going on i thought there was such a thing as security specially on a server standing on a super secure island with thousands of magic charms around it, protecting it from the evil eyes of national authorities and heroic protectors of freedom of speech, scaring frivolous hangers-on with magnificent prices guess not
29. Dec 2002
jetlag
nursing a huge jetlag have been absolutely too lazy to do something about it cos i do need some effort to bring about the discipline to change my internal clock now, because i have not even tried, i have been going to sleep at 8 in the evening and waking up 5 in the morning, happily eating noodle soup at 8 in the morning (dutch winter time) it is so awfully depressive outside, the few hours that there is light, that i dont even feel i am missing much hope this New Year Party stuff will do the trick

electricity
the whole day and night my neighbourhood has been without electricity i heard this has happened a couple of times during the last month, in different parts of the city paranoia allover that ppl will start plundering i had never seen such a darkness in a city

messages
first i thought these weird messages were some virus so i kept trashing them i think they kept having different adresses like your typical spam adress: evhr67bfds@froebla.com lkfaaacx953@oatmail.net and on and on but now came a whole page looking like this and the real scary thing: it came from my own bloody adress!!! some hours ago i wrote to the server sysadmin they answered me they dont know what it is, but they are checking it out, not to worry! somebody is just so f****** bored they have to hassle me!!!

dogs
apropos dogs: in the bay where i live there lives a dancing dog it is a gold colored specimen of medium size and it has a mild tic this tic makes its whole body twitch in such a way that it bends the knees of all four legs at the same time, in a soft but steady rythm which goes very well with the bass line of ambient dance music it is quite interesting to observe tourists who see this dog for the first time

people
it is evening, dark already it is full moon, so there will be lots of parties tonight on the beach from where i am sitting with gene, i can see a long stretch of the beach the tide is very low nearby a party has started already and some ppl are juggling with fire about a hundred meters further i can see another party will start soon a bright light is illuminating the sand and the water the beam of light comes from a site where a new resort is being buildt about 50 ppl are there, kids and grown-ups, carrying something so i think vaguely:" oh nice the workers are having a party" i have just taken a closer look: they are not having a party they are collecting sand, for making cement there are children and old ppl filling bags there are men and women carrying the bags away because of the extremely low tide they can get to the finer sand which is normally under the water

dog
a story that has been going on in thailand since two weeks i have been following it in the papers: the king has a lot of dogs the king has a favorite dog the king has written a book about this dog and now the whole country is in the grips of the kings dog: the dogs picture has been printed on t-shirts books and t-shirts have been sold out from day one everyday the frontpages of newspapers bear stories and pictures of kilometers long queus, tears, fights, promises that more of the desireable items will be made will update this story when i find out what this dog did to become sucha celebrity

water
just realized i may have been a guinea pig in the testing of a new method for cleaning drinking water the bottles of water drinking water have the following written on them: the finest purified hygienc drinking water: using the fine process of filtration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light and ozonation havent been worried about this untill i realized nobody can explain me what reverse osmosis is .......ooops! it even gets more strange, since today the text on the bottles is changed it just says: KOH CHANG DEW DROPS drinking water food&drug adm. approval and the letters are not anymore blue; they are green now
16. Dec 2002
running
on mornings, when i manage to wake up early enough for the temperature to be still below 30 C, i go running. because of the heat there is no warming up needed, there is no pain/cramp at all but exhaustion comes really quick i am not such an accompished runner at all, i just run for clearing my head and to keep some stamina while i can think about things normally here it is proving quite difficult to get anywhere with the thinking while running to get to the thinking i need some rythm, but before having a rythm i am already out of air maybe i will have to learn thinking while swimming
15. Dec 2002
enthropy
since i arrived here (in thailand) i keep thinking about entropy it is a bit a strange thing to be thinking about at all, but... as far as i understand molecules and therefore all things made of them have a tendency to entropy (what is the verb for that:entropize?) meaning they tend not to stay separate, but get mixed up so instead of having a certain amount of stuff A and a certain amount of stuff B two different things, you tend to end up with lots of ABmix which is more of the same thing instead of distinct things and this is supposed to be the more likely thing to happen, especially when you dont pay attention, or when you shake the box, they say but (now here comes my thought!) when i look around here, especially here where the nature is very messy, where there are millions of people, nobody really paying attention, few rules, few control things are so "distinct" how can i describe this better? from this enthropy idea you would expect there exist more brown or grey medium sized fishes, on the contrary there are almost only outrageously distinct fishes here, in all shapes and colours you would expect disaster when it rains here, while a large part of life takes place outside, at least stray rubbish and mud, but none guess that i sound either like an idiot or like a nut? maybe need more thinking to develop my thought

something seems wrong with my mail server! uh-oh! can not figure out here what is going on, but i am getting messages that are not for me at all or i dont know who they are from/for mmm maybe somebody is just playing a joke on me, lol!

thetrip
we get to bang bao by 1630 . still daylight. there are two fishermen. the older, small one whos name i will not get, is steering the younger one who does the heavier work, lon. then the passengers: ang a tourist from bankok, marie-jo: anthropology student, trying to learn chinese, simon: weterner living in koh chang since ten months, with a thai g-friend, so his thai speak is very good and he knows all about fishing, thomas(?), paitoon: world traveller, owner of a soon to be rocking bar on koh chang, me(?) we leave with a stunning amount of alcohol and water. some people start on the local rum immediately it is totally dark by now after an hour ride we lay still and the lights come on: they are green neons hanging from messy bamboo grids to both sides of the boat we have to wait now till the squids will come in sufficient amounts to throw out the net meanwhile we fish with lines. we pile up about ten squids amongst the 8 of us i learn to recognize schools of them, passing like a cloud, maybe three meters deep. sometimes bigger ones come all the way up to the surface attracted by the light(?) i imagine i can actually influence the squids to byte by concentrating on them then the professionals have received some sign that a lot of them have collected. the net is being thrown out and hangs from beams sticking out to the right side of the boat: all the passengers have to hang onto the left side to prevent the boat from flipping over the net sinks quietly into the water and then a beautifull thing happens: thousands of small silver fish start jumping out of the water above the net, into the bright lights nobody can explain me this phenomena we wait for a while again and the net comes back up, the catch is thrown onto the deckand has to be sorted: small squids, big squids, silver fishes there is a strange pleasure in grabbing the still living, slimy bodies the amounts are stunning the see around is full of silver particlesfrom the fishes there is a definite pleasure in hunting and catching! by the time we reach the next location thomas has passed out in the tiny cabin, marie-jo is sleeping on the front deck paitoon has confiscated my hammock. besides the pros it is only simon, ang and me holding on to all the lines this time we have to wait longer the green light/the late hour/the rythm of the diesel engine/the darkness outside the green? i start to see patternsin the movement of the schools of fishes: they are hypnotized by the light, dancing in ever closer circles around the boat, by their movement hypnotizing me, i could watch this forever the fishermen use a new trick now: they have a red light aswell, when they turn this onand turn off the green the fish collect in concentric circles under this lamp in incredible dense schools after having caught two more nets full of squids (the little silver fishes seem to be of no importance at all) (it is maybe 3:30 now) we are going to move to a place for catching big fish because this is a ride of about an hour away the lights are turned off. the whole front deck is illuminated, it seems by blacklight, the bags of squid seem huge light bulbs for a while i play with the fluorescent water, painting my trousers, the deck then i conquer my hammock back from paitoon and doze for an hour by the time we stop again the sky has started to become light the early sleepers have also woken and we start on the "big game" now the fishermen are holding a couple of lines in the same time helping us with every catch, cos apperently

got my fishing trip
paitoon has a lead to a trustworthy fisherperson we get to bang bao by motorbike and paitoon talks to a couple of guys then apperently we have to talk to a person in the next village rong than this place is only 3 km away but there is no direct road to it: we have to drive around the entire island to get there another boat, another fisherman, but the one we need is at home sleeping, onto the motorbike into the jungle: a drive of about a half hour on a small track we wake up the man: he is the captain, he is about 1 meter 60, he will take us for a night out on the sea!!!!!!! tomorrow 1700 we are going

fishing village again
checked out bang bao once more inthe afternoon this time, just before the boats are leaving. paitoon told me he found a dead fisherman on the beach this summer this being the second such a story (the bakers girlfriend also found one a couple of months ago) i feel slightly uncomfortable walking on the jetty between the fishingboats. it is luckily before sundown, but there are close to a hundred smiling and laughing guys on the jetty, crowding around me just a bit too closely. most boats are getting ready for take off. i get out of there as quickly as possible, before somebody gets it into their head to kidnap me right there!

snorkletrip
meanwhile baker has convinced me to go on a touristic snorkelling trip all three islands we will visit are uninhabited (uninhabited by people) two hours by boat to the first stop at koh kra takes me some time to get the rythm of breathing and blowing out water from the snorkle thing the sea contains such amazing creatures sea urchins with bloody long spikes: under the water they seem half a meter long huge brain like shapes in yellow with mouths allover grassy fields on mushroom-like plateaus small corals, the shape of christmas trees in almost fluorescent colors blue orange red big eleborate coral structures and the fishes at some points i am completely surounded by them at first i am a bit frightened, cos they actually take little bytes of my skin! but by the second island: koh nok (means bird island, is not really an island, just three big stones stickinging out of the sea) i start to enjoy the skin nibbling fishes they are maybe ten cm long, black and white striped, with an oily shine of rainbow colors on their back when i am close to the boat they throw pieces of bread in the water and hundreds maybe thousands are schooling together to get the bread i get more courageous and hold the bread in my hand the zebra fishes get so excited they come half out of the water and i can touch their backs i can feel their lifely bodies all around me meanwhile two speedboats full of tourists have arrived to the same spot when they all get to the water in their orange lifevests (they can not swim?) they look like a school of seacows making an awfull lot of noise somehow i can not seem to get out of their flock i see some of them actually destroying some coral by carelessly touching and trampling it so i get out of the water for a while, onto the rocks at the third, bigger island koh rang, i start to get tired and the back of my legs starts to feel burned from the sun my lips start to feel like salty rubber i take a walk along the beach and besides lots of coral and shells i find a crab party on a fallen tree there are two takeaway meals in white boxes both meals have a spoon, it seems like any moment two people will come from the bushes to start their welldeserved lunch but from close up i can see all the vegetables have already bleached to white and the crabs, disguised in the shells of snails, are feasting on it on the way back i spot a big white boat in the distance the baker tells me it is probably a casino: gambling is forbidden in thailand, so casinos are lined up offshorejust across the cambodian border, on big boats
04. Dec 2002
fishing village
off to bang bao it is about 5 km up the coast, a drive thru jungle the village is basically a long pier into the bay with all the houses/restaurants/shops extending to the sides it is like a small labyrint of wooden bridges and ladders all the businesses falling over each other to be connected to the main pier some establishments hiding behind each other so i will never know what they contain there are big tanks and aqariums with living fishes waiting to be eaten there are the blue tables with drying fishes and there are the fishing boats on the end of the pier they look so small and there are crews of about five ppl on each of them they look curiously at me in one of the restaurants i tell a man that i want to go on the fishing boat for a night he seems very worried about my proposal, definitely not encouraging he says the crews on the boats are mostly cambodians when that doesnt seem to impress and scare me enough, he says that the boats normally stay out on the sea for more days in a row that the crews drink heavily, that they fight, that sometimes a body is found on the beach that it is especially not a good idea for a girl seems the cambodians are the evil-doers of this region

fishing boats
ok the baker is fine and i am paranoid his girlfriend is ok too at night you can see about a hundred bright lights on the sea they are fishing boats i got this idea into my head that i wanna go with one of those fishing boats for a night cos i imagine it to be so beautifull to see the fishes in those lights the baker is trying to help me finding a way to do this cos this appears to be more complicated than it sounds he adviced me to go to one village which is quite nearby and from where he thinks the boats are leaving

artificial reality
two days before leaving for thailand i finaly got some fresh understanding about ap i went to rotterdam where the wonderfull A spend a whole day with me explaining how to play with the program at least now i know enough to ask more exact questions it somehow fits: trying to figure out artificial paradises on the tropical beach
